M&S is set to open a new £3 million foodhall in Hatfield's Oldings Corner Retail Park and take over the former Next unit.
The site is set to open in Unit 1a early next year, and is expected to create up to 70 new jobs, with recruitment starting later this year.
The news finally confirms the identity of the "national grocer" that has long been rumoured as new tenants for the former Next unit, which has stood empty since the fashion retailer closed earlier this year.
Customers will be able to enjoy an in-store bakery, serving a selection of bread, pastries and takeaway coffee, dedicated flower and wine shops, cheese and charcuterie barge and a range of fresh fruit and vegetables sourced from M&S’ Select Farmers.
"I am delighted that Marks & Spencer have chosen Hatfield as a site for one of their brand-new foodhalls, creating up to 70 new jobs and marking a welcome return to the borough," said councillor James Broach, executive member for resources at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.
"The new foodhall will be a wonderful addition for shoppers in Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City.
"The new store will be opening at time when the council is delivering on several major redevelopment projects in Hatfield Town Centre and the surrounding area, making Hatfield a thriving and attractive place to live, work and visit."
M&S has invested over £60m in its stores across the East of England over the past two years, including a brand-new full-line Stevenage, with the retailer pumping £3 million into the opening of their Hatfield store.
Ryan Kerr, regional manager at M&S, added: "It’s brilliant to be investing again in growing our footprint across Hertfordshire and bringing the very best of M&S Food to Hatfield shoppers.
"We have over 4,000 colleagues across the region so we’re excited to welcome a brand-new store team to the M&S family.
"Our store rotation programme is all about making sure we have the right stores with the right space which excite and inspire customers.
"We’ll be able to do just that from Oldings Corner, showcasing M&S’ unbeatable quality and that touch of M&S magic we’re known for.
"We’ll deliver on our trusted value promise – great value without compromising on quality – and have a fantastic selection of products for customers, whether doing a weekly family shop or choosing their next Dine In deal.
"Work will start on site later this year and we are already counting down the days to opening the doors."
