Motor racing enthusiasts have been celebrating a major milestone for a Potters Bar club.

More than 80 members of the Green Belt Motor Club, both past and present, assembled at Welwyn Sports & Social Club to celebrate the club's 60th anniversary.

Proposing a toast to the club, president Richard Warne said that during the last half century it had attracted over 800 motor sports enthusiasts as members.

During the 90s the club expanded by merging with the Stort Valley Motor Club and for many years, it held weekly meetings in the Old Owens Sports Club in Potters Bar.

In 1964 Tony Strong was a founder member and he was the club’s secretary for over 20 years.

He had passed away in 2019 but Warne said he would certainly be looking down on the club and saying well done to its committee for keeping it going, as would the late Gerry Thurlow, who was one of its most inspirational presidents.

Warne added: "For the last five decades the club has organised many types of competitive motor sporting events.

"Recently the most important of these have been special stages rallies.

"Currently we are involved with some other clubs in running the Snetterton Stages Rally in Norfolk each February, and a new stages rally on Ministry of Defence land at Thetford in December.

"We have also organised two annual sprint racing meetings at North Weald Airfield for the last 40 years - which have all been generously supported by Tams Packing."
