Potters Bar Bowls Club held one of their favourite in-house tournaments and it attracted a big field as usual.

The trophy for the George Edwards Cup was donated to the club in 2018 by the family of the late two-time president, George Edwards.

The annual event attracted 48 players enjoyed a very competitive afternoon on all six rinks watched by members of the Edwards family, including George’s two daughters and brother, Ronnie.

And this year, the fiercely contested event, which pits teams of ladies and men, was won for the first time in the competition’s history by the ladies, winning 94-87.

And their prize was collected by captain Julie Lucas from Ronnie Edwards.

Shire Park Bowls Club (Tewin) had another mixed week.

In the Welwyn Hatfield Bowls Tournament, they got two points away to Northaw & Cuffley thanks to a 16-14 rink win for Chris Wright, Bernie Kleiser and Gus Edwards.

However, they lost on the other two to go down 34-22 and in the same tournament they lost on all rinks and overall away to Parkside.

However, there was better news in the Welwyn Hatfield League where the Yellows beat Welwyn Garden City Knights 42-26 at home, both rinks winning with the best of them the 26-12 success for Dave Warner, Elaine Wulcko and Bill Draycott.

In Division One of the East Herts League, the Blues won 38-37 at Sawbridgeworth.

That was brought about by a 19-17 success for Dickie Jackson, Steve Arnold and Peter Hills who grabbed two shots on their final end.

They lost a second match though, going down 29-27 away to Hertford.

The crucial rink was that of Rob Hazeu, Steve Arnold and Les Parsley who had gone into the final end 15-14 down.

They then found themselves holding two shots until Hertford's skip, Gary Warrender, drew in with his last wood to get shot.

Also in the EHBL, the Gold team lost 43-24 to Bishop's Stortford Ospreys although the rink of Andy Short, Keith Smith and Terry Metcalf won 14-12.
