The battle of two anniversary-celebrating bowls clubs brought a fantastic outing for both.

For Shire Park (Tewin), it was the last of their 75th celebration matches and came against Hatfield, who are celebrating their centenary.

The elder club came out on top, winning on four of the six rinks, although the joy for both was an age range among the players from 14 up to 89.

The top rink for Shire Park was Janet Brown, Gordon Price and Gus Edwards who won 18-10.

Park came away with nothing from a Welwyn Hatfield Bowls League match at Hertford, ending their push for the title, and they were beaten at home by Townsend in the St Albans district fours and in the district triples by North Mymms.

However, the ladies did beat Welwyn & District in the Friday night triples.

Their only friendly of the week saw them lose on four of the five rinks at Batchwood, the only success coming from Brenda Barber, Chris Goode and Draycott who won 17-15.

Shire Park's big result of the week was an impressive 35-25 success for their Yellows over BSP, sending them through to the final of the WHBL John Brown Trophy.

The winning rink of the two came at home with a 23-11 victory for Steve Calladine, Elaine Wulcko and Bill Draycott.

Park did lose another WHBL semi-final though, going down 40-24 to Datchworth in the Jubilee Cup.

Datchworth's home rink of Barbara Williams, Jan Smith, Andy Short and Keith Smith lost only four ends in a 26-8 success and although Shire Park won their home match 16-14, it was Datchworth who advanced.

Datchworth's second semi-final of the week was in the East Herts Bowls League's Ranson Cup, where they were beaten 32-27 by Potters Bar.

Graham Akers, Rob Hazeu, Jim Smith and Derek Henley won away from home, coming from 14-9 down to win 15-14.

However, the home rink lost 18-12 to send Bar into the final.

Datchworth’s run of victories in the Stevenage Mixed League ended with a 59-41 loss at home to Riverain.

They won on just one of the three rinks, that an 18-15 success for Laie Williams, Ann Edwards, Janet Akers and Steve Chamberlain.

The women were at home to Royston in a North Herts Women's Bowling Association League match, but lost on both rinks and 47-27 overall.

Three mixed friendlies in the week brought three victories.

Townsend of St Albans were the first to be seen off, beaten 43-37 at Turkey Farm despite just one win and one draw from the four rinks played.

That belonged to Lucy and Ian Williams, plus skip Graham Akers, who sealed an 18-5 success.

The second home friendly ended in an 89-59 win over Ware, with four of the five rinks tasting victory.

The best of them was Janet Akers, Jim Whittle, Terry Metcalf and Les Parsley with a 22-8 win.

And they also won on the road at Harpenden, claiming three of the four played for a 67-52 victory.

The top rink was claimed by Maureen Blunt, Julian Hales and Rob Hazeu with a 22-13 win.
