Hatfield care home residents were delighted to welcome some fluffy friends into the world.

Spring has sprung at a Sanctuary Care home in Hatfield, after the residents welcomed baby chicks into the world.

Marking the beginning of spring, Hatfield Residential and Nursing Home in Tamblin Way took delivery of nine eggs for the residents and the team to watch hatch.

Checking in on their fluffy friends every day, residents watched the eggs in an incubator before they hatched into three males and six females, before feeding and caring for them.

Residents even named their egg-stra special friends, with 92-year-old resident Joyce Lambert calling the first two chicks Squeaky and Twiggy.

Joyce (who is pictured with Twiggy) said: “I’ve been keeping an eye on the chicks since the first one hatched – there are absolutely fabulous.”

Jean Taylor, 87, added: “It was lovely to see the chicks up close, I’ve never held one before.”

The chicks were part of the ‘Living Eggs’ project, where care homes and schools get the chance to see chicks hatching and then have the opportunity to handle and look after them for around 10 days, before they are re-homed.

The Sanctuary Care home’s activities assistant Kayleigh Innes said: “Our residents have absolutely loved having the chicks here – watching them hatch from eggs and being too small to hold to now being able to enjoy a cuddle has been magical and something we have all enjoyed.”
