A Hatfield care home is set to close, with its operator citing declining resident and workforce numbers.

St Christopher's Care Home in Drakes Way is shutting down later this month, with HC-One, the care company which operates the home, confirming the decision to the Welwyn Hatfield Times.

According to HC-ONE, low residency numbers have put "financial constraints" on St Christopher's, while a staff shortage was also cited.

"Our priority is always the health, safety and wellbeing of every individual that we support, and we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality, kind care," said a spokeswoman.

"As such, we regularly assess the quality and suitability of the service we provide in our homes.

"For some time now, there has been a lack of demand for the services we offer at St Christopher’s, which means that the home’s occupancy levels are far lower than the levels we’d expect and hope for at a home of this size.

"This has resulted in us previously closing two units, and is affecting the wider financial stability of the home.

"In addition, the layout and interior design of the home requires significant changes in order for us to continue to deliver the good quality care we strive to provide, and for us to meet the ever-changing needs of residents.

"Unfortunately the nature and scale of the work required is so great that it is not financially possible for us to undertake it, given the financial constraints the home is facing due to the low occupancy levels.

"These factors, combined with the challenges we have faced in keeping a sustained workforce at St Christopher’s, have sadly led us to the conclusion that it is in everyone’s best interests for us to plan to close St Christopher’s and for residents to be supported by other homes in the local community."

HC-One confirmed that support will be provided for residents, their families and staff, continuing: "This decision has not been taken lightly and we appreciate it will be unsettling news for the residents and colleagues that it impacts.

"We are working closely with Hertfordshire County Council and are supporting our residents, their loved ones and our colleagues through this process, to ensure it is as smooth as possible for everyone involved."
