Explore historic Hertford Castle at a forthcoming free open day.
Hertford Town Council will be opening Hertford Castle for visitors to explore and enjoy a guided tour of the Grade I-listed building on Sunday, October 29, 2023 from 12 noon to 4pm.
Weather permitting, the guided tour will continue outside to explore the beautiful Castle grounds.
Inside the Castle, guests will be guided by volunteers from the Friends of Hertford Castle through The Downshire Suite, the Mayor’s Parlour and Robing Room, before heading down to the basement, which features themed rooms such as ‘dungeons’ and the ‘Victorian kitchen’.
Volunteers will be on hand to impart their historical knowledge of the Castle and answer questions.
Entry to the event is free to attend, although donations to the Mayor of Hertford’s chosen charities for the year – Mudlarks and Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust – are welcomed.
Sign up is possible on the day but to avoid disappointment visitors are invited to book a time slot in advance via the Hertford Town Council website at https://www.hertford.gov.uk/events-listings/hertford-castle-open-day-guided-tours/.
Please note, the building is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchairs, prams or anyone with restricted mobility due to spiral staircases.
This event is part of Hertford Town Council’s long tradition of providing events in the Castle grounds.
The full programme can be found at https://www.hertford.gov.uk/events-listings/.
On the open day, there will be live music on the Castle lawn performed by the Richard Hale School band, refreshments available to purchase from local charity Future Hope, and The Hertford Pantry will be collecting donations for their food bank.
The Hertford Castle Open Day and Guided Tours coincides with the final day of the free Scarecrow Trail taking place in Hertford, where visitors are invited to explore and discover the scarecrows hiding within the town centre businesses.
The free trail leaflet can be collected from the Hertford Town and Tourist Information Centre.
The chair of Hertford Town Council’s development and leisure committee, Cllr Ann Woodward, said: “The Friends of Hertford Castle are passionate about the history of the Castle, so this is a great opportunity for everyone who would like to know more about this building which has sat at the heart of our town for many centuries to learn more about it on a tour.”
