An avid campaigner from a village near Welwyn Garden City is set to protest against badger culling outside the Houses of Parliament tomorrow.

Mary Barton, of Ayot St Peter, has organised the demonstration against the killing of the UK's badger population, and is inviting people to join her between 11am and 2pm on Friday.

Figures from the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs show that more than 210,000 badgers have been killed since 2013, as part of efforts to stop the spread of bovine tuberculosis in cattle.

But, Mary claims that research has shown very little evidence linking the animal to the spread of bovine TB, and wants to Government to stop its "cruel slaughter".

"Badgers are being blamed for the spread of bovine TB in cattle, but there is very little evidence to support that claim," she said.

"In fact, the disease is spread by poorly tested cattle moving from farm to farm, by slurry spreading and poor biosecurity.

"In Wales they have stopped killing badgers relying instead on better biosecurity.

"That's why I am protesting against this cruel slaughter of our beautiful iconic badger population.

"So many people say that the only badger they have ever seen is a dead one at the roadside, hit by a car. The government is planning to kill even more badgers in the years ahead so our chances of seeing a badger, dead or alive, will be very small indeed."
