Cubs from Welwyn Garden City visited The Bunker in Hatfield.
The Bunker is a free museum based in Hatfield Police Station which celebrates the Grade II-listed building’s heritage as a former aircraft factory.
It was created as a public engagement initiative to foster better relations between the police and the local community, particularly schoolchildren.
Cubs from the 2nd and 7th Welwyn Garden City Scout group enjoyed a visit to The Bunker last month.
On Tuesday, March 19, PCSO Emma Carson and PC Cameron Abraham welcomed the Cubs along with their Cub Leader.
The visit was also an opportunity for the young people to get to know their local police officers and learn more about how the police can help them.
The group were given a tour of the museum and able to learn more about the fascinating history of the building through the various artefacts and exhibits on show.
These include photos, historical items, original film footage, dioramas and models that tell the story of the building from its origins in 1933 as the headquarters of the de Havilland Aircraft Company, through to its current use.
At the end of the visit, PCSO Carson had the pleasure of presenting Cub member Jack with the ‘You Shape’ Award.
This accolade is given to a Cub after three core elements; leading, planning and representing. To achieve the award Jack had to choose something he wanted to improve at Cubs.
His choice was to educate the Cubs on recycling and he set up recycling bins at their hut. Jack led and planned a whole evening event and represented the pack on Remembrance Day by laying a wreath.
PCSO Carson said: “It was a joy to show the Cubs round The Bunker and it was a privilege to present Jack with his award at the end of the visit. It was clear he had worked extremely hard!
“Cub Leader Horse told us that he received lots of positive feedback from both the Cubs and their families.
"A lot of hard work went into creating The Bunker, so it’s really pleasing to hear that the community are enjoying it.
“These visits are so important as it gives us a chance to speak to locals face-to-face and it helps to build trust with our younger members of the community at an early stage.”
