The Liberal Democrats have announced their Welwyn Hatfield parliamentary candidate for the upcoming July 4 general election.

John Munro will look to win the constituency for the party when the UK heads to the polls later this summer, having previously stood for the Lib Dems in 2015, in his then hometown of Weston-super-Mare.

Mr Munro works in the general counsel’s department at the Co-op, and was previously a funeral director with Co-op funeral care. He has lived with his partner in Hertfordshire for the last four years.

"I’m grateful to the Welwyn Hatfield Liberal Democrats for putting their trust in me to fight this important general election," he said.

"Welwyn Hatfield deserves an outspoken, vocal, independent champion who isn’t under the thumb of government whips.

"That’s why I’m asking residents to vote for me, so that I can be their voice, campaigning them on issues that matter to them in Westminster."

Chair of the Welwyn Hatfield Liberal Democrats, Cllr Russ Platt added: "I’m delighted to confirm that the Lib Dem general election candidate for Welwyn Hatfield will be local Hertfordshire resident, John Munro.

"John is a life long Liberal Democrat campaigner and will be an outstanding champion for Welwyn Hatfield and its residents.

"I’m so pleased to have him on board and I know he’s looking forward to taking the fight to both the Conservatives and Labour over the next six weeks."

Mr Munro will stand against Conservative candidate and current MP Grant Shapps, Labour candidate Andrew Lewin, and a candidate from the Green Party.
