It’s been a fantastic experience so far being the Hatfield Town Mayor, and I’ve really enjoyed throwing myself into the role since receiving my chains of office in May.
We only get a year in the role, so I want to make the most of it.
Being Hatfield Town Mayor gives me a unique position and opportunity to meet with residents, community groups, local businesses and charities, and discuss their key concerns and celebrate their achievements.
I also get to represent the town council at a number of civic events in and around the town and represent the town itself as Hatfield’s ‘First Citizen’.
I was immensely proud to do so at the town’s D-Day commemoration event back in June, marking the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
If you would like me to attend one of your events then please do get in touch with the office via the Hatfield Town Council website, navigating to the Invite the Mayor page.
Having held several strategic and operational positions in the public sector (HM Prison and Probation Service, Transport and the NHS), I try to bring that perspective into being a councillor, acutely aware of the need to provide high quality services whilst managing the public finances responsibly.
The key to this is to keep talking and engaging as we make those important decisions.
As a mother of two, it’s probably not surprising that a key focus of mine is to engage with young people and look at how we can support their needs and encourage them to take up opportunities to help them thrive and grow into healthy adults.
I was delighted to be at the opening of the rejuvenated Millwards Park along with children from De Havilland primary school and will keep looking for ways in which we can serve our young people better.
I was also keen to have more family orientated events in the town centre and pleased to confirm that our Hatfield Community Day will be taking place on Saturday, September 21, in Hatfield Town Centre, Lion Square from 11am to 4pm.
There will be an array of activities and performances taking place to suit all age groups, and it will be a great chance for everyone in and around the town to celebrate Hatfield's unique and diverse community.
Entry to the event is entirely free and there will be lots of music, street entertainers and stalls to keep you entertained.
These events benefit the town in two ways: not only does it bring people together, but its also a boost to the local economy and helps makes the town a more attractive place to live, visit and do business in.
It builds on the great work being done by the Borough Council in promoting and expanding the market stalls and events we have in the town centre, and we hope to see you there!
