New data has revealed a whopping £8 million worth of council tax has gone unpaid in Welwyn Hatfield.

Data collected by Accident Claims Advice through a Freedom of Information request showed that millions in council tax went unpaid across Hertfordshire authorities.

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council was among them, with £8 million worth of debt built up since 2019.

That includes an outstanding balance of of £1 million from the 2019/20 tax year, and a shortfall of £1.3m for 2020/21.

The figure has risen every year since, standing at £1.4 million for 2021/22, £1.6 million for 2022/23, and a stunning £2.5 million for 2023/24 from 3,296 unsettled accounts.

Those who do not qualify for support and do not pay their council tax could be hit with enforcement measures, starting with a reminder which can then result in a court summons.

"The revenue that is raised from council tax is used to pay for a range of services across the borough, including services for those that are most in need," said a spokesperson for WHBC.

"We also collect council tax on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council, the Police and Crime Commissioner and parish and town councils.

"Help is available for anyone that is having financial difficulties and cannot afford to pay their council tax.
