The Barn Theatre in Welwyn Garden City is set to put on a production of Shakespeare in Love.
Following hot on the heels of its production of Shakespeare's Richard III, its production of the romantic comedy 'Shakespeare in Love' opens on Friday, November 8.
Based on the screenplay of the film by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, and adapted for the stage by Lee Hall, this enchanting tale, filled with laughter and tears, triumphs, tragedies and wit, explores the transformative power of love and art.
Amid the vibrant backdrop of London’s theatre scene, we meet the charismatic yet struggling playwright, William Shakespeare.
Plagued by writer’s block and personal turmoil, he finds unexpected inspiration in the radiant Viola de Lesseps.
Their clandestine romance ignites a whirlwind of passion, defying the rigid social norms of their time.
As Shakespeare and Viola’s love deepens, it inspires the creation of his most beloved masterpiece, 'Romeo and Juliet'.
The production is directed by Laura Eddy, who has plenty of experience leading large scale productions at the Barn, having previously directed 'Treasure Island', 'Nell Gwynn' and 'Arabian Nights'.
Laura said: "Shakespeare In Love is one of the funniest love stories ever told, and this production brings to life all the riotous fun and romance, comedy and tragedy that's in the script.
"With sword fights, mistaken identities and even a real live dog, it invites the audience to laugh along and to see Shakespeare as you've never seen before!".
Included in the cast of over 25 actors is newcomer to the Barn, James Copeman.
The last time James was on stage was at school when he was just 13 years old, so taking on the lead role of William Shakespeare was a daunting prospect.
James says: "I was persuaded to audition by a friend of mine, and I was blown away when I was offered the role of William Shakespeare.
"The rehearsals have been great fun, however, and I'm really looking forward to performing in front of an audience; I just hope I don't recognise anyone!".
Shakespeare In Love can be seen at the Barn theatre in Welwyn Garden City from Friday, November 8 until Saturday, November 16.
