Welwyn Garden City suffered a defeat in their final home game of the East Hockey League season against Bedford.
Confidence was high after their win at Luton Town one week earlier but two first-half goals handed the visitors to the Hertfordshire Sports Village a 2-0 win.
The result leaves Welwyn sixth in Division Two South West with a trip to third from bottom Broxbourne rounding off the year.
This game started well for the hosts with Welwyn looking threatening.
They were unable to score though from the multiple chances created, Nate Last and David Allmand-Smith among those to be denied.
And as the half progressed Bedford started to apply pressure of their own, scoring their first from a well-executed shot into the bottom corner.
WGC tried to respond but a tackle earned them a green card and shortly afterwards Bedford doubled their lead with a player left unmarked at the far post.
The second half saw Welwyn continue to push forward only to be met by resolute defence.
They tried to create openings by passing the ball around but despite their best efforts they frustratingly failed to find the back of the net.
