Welwyn Garden City’s poor start to the season continued with a late defeat to Bishop's Stortford thirds in East Hockey League.
The men's first team of the Hertfordshire Sports Village club conceded a penalty flick in the last few minutes to go down 1-0 in Division Two South West.
It leaves them with one point after three games.
The first half was quite bright with Welwyn controlling the game but not converting the opportunities that came their way.
Nate Last went on a mazy run past defenders and the keeper but just over ran the ball at the last moment.
A Pete Mullens snapshot that was heading for the top corner of the net was smartly saved by the home keeper while at the other end, the returning James Fowler made several interceptions, Rob Sansom was timing tackles to perfection and skipper Dan Klinger never looked in trouble with a couple of decent saves.
The second half was different though and the away side did not have the best of things.
And with mere minutes to go, a penalty corner was fired in and hit Sansom’s heel on the line.
That resulted in the flick which they converted into the top corner and with no time left to mount a comeback, all three points went to Stortford.
WGC host St Albans next, needing to pick up points.
