One of the highlights of the season at Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club turned not to be the firecracker expected as fickle wind proved a pain.

The fleet had arrived at Stanborough Lakes for the Commodore's Cup with almost the ideal sailing conditions – blue skies and a strong wind blowing straight down the lake.

And the first race was keenly contested with Annette Walter finishing just a few seconds ahead of Alan Campbell with Tony Hales and Neil Hewitt in the double hander third.

Mike Caddy recovered from a capsize to finish fourth.

That set up what should have been a thrilling pursuit race with Campbell, starting last, needing to hunt down Walter to win the Cup.

However, it turned out to be a damp squib.

The early starters including Walter set off in a good wind but as Campbell passed through the start line, the breeze had all but blown itself out, making it difficult for him to put in the required challenge at the front of the fleet.

It meant the second race finished with exactly the same positions as the first, keeping Walter in possession of the trophy she won in 2022 for another year.
