Rain played its part in proceedings for the first real time this season but it couldn't stop Welwyn Garden City jumping into the promotion places at the top of the Herts Cricket League Championship.

Some games did not get to a finish, or even a start in certain cases, Hatfield & Crusaders' Division Four A clash at home to Old Camdenians being one of them and Datchworth's home fixture with St Albans in Division Three A another.

There was also the cancellation of the big game in the Championship as leaders Dunstable Town and second-placed Preston had to share six points each without a ball being bowled.

But that left the way open for others and while Flitwick now top the pile in the second tier, WGC are up to second with an eight-wicket win in the Garden City derby at Letchworth.

It was a fairly comfortable victory in the end for Welwyn.

Having bowled the hosts out for 131 in 34 overs, Dan Roomans the pick of the bowlers with 3-36, although there were also two wickets for Tom Whitton and Fayaz Homyoon, they took less than 20 overs to reach the target.

Radhakrishna Marripati smashed 54 in 28 balls, six sixes and a four among them, and he had support from Homyoon (38*) as well as Jacob Logan (25) and Dylan Dhesi (13).

WGC seconds were another on the unfortunate sides, their derby with Knebworth Park in Division Two B among those cancelled, although Potters Bar seconds did play, finishing tied with Holtwhites Trinibis after 35 overs each.

Both sides also finished on 135-9, Bar having batted first and reached their total via contributions from Luke Owers (29*), Kyran Millard (29) and Dan Millard (24).

In reply there were two wickets for both of Sakuntha Premarathne and Lewis Lavin but in the end the tie will be seen as a moral victory.

Holtwhites needed just three runs from the final over and had four wickets in hand.

However, with Premanthe bowling, there was only two conceded and one wicket claimed in the first four deliveries, and the visitors' haste at wanting the winning run meant the final two balls led to run outs.

Tewin made sure the rain would not be a factor in Division Three A as they beat Totteridge Millhillians by seven wickets in double-quick time.

The visitors were bowled out inside 32 overs for 86, Will Pickworth claiming 5-21 in his seven overs, backed up by 2-10 by Jamie Bryce.

The runs were then knocked off in 16 overs, skipper Luke Wilde scoring an unbeaten 37 in 19 balls.

That puts Tewin top, 22 points clear of Bushey, with Datchworth fourth.

Hatfield Hyde are fourth in Division Four B after a 99-run win over Harpenden.

Nadeem Ashraf led the way for Hyde with a crazy 74 in just 29 balls, four of them fours and eight clearing the rope altogether.

That got Hyde to 194 in 30 overs, the assist going to S Davies with a more-patient 60.

Mohamed Miflan then took 4-6 in four overs as Harpenden were skittled for 95.

Bentley Heath lost by two wickets at home to Luton Town & Indians in Division Five A.

Ollie Hubbard top scored with 52 but despite 5-26 from Ahsan Ahmed, Luton scraped home in the 34th over.
