A foreboding weather forecast or wind and rain kept many away from their craft - but there were four brave souls who took on the challenge.

The rain never arrived for the one scheduled pursuit race but the gusts did.

Mike Caddy was the first victim who failed to complete a gybe at the end of a fast downwind run.

He capsized with the sail cocked up in the air which meant the wind quickly pushed him to the bank at the cafe end of the lake.

David Lambert lost his crash helmet; which was picked up by Annette Walter as she sailed past it.

He sailed a bit more conservatively after that and was third.

As he was in the last boat to start, Alan Campbell had the challenge of hunting down Walter who had started over seven minutes ahead of him.

He made steady progress but when the wind dropped he lost ground before making big gains as the gusts came back.

When Walter capsized, he closed to 100 metres before she got going again.

He still needed to get past her before the hour was up though, achieving it with less than four minutes to go and despite a very big gust as they rounded the top mark.

Both managed to stay upright but Campbell went on to win by 10 seconds.
