Mark Kermode, one of the UK’s best known and most trusted film critics, will host a charity movie evening in Welwyn Garden City next month.

The coiffured critic will be at the Garden City Cinema complex, Campus West, on Monday, July 6.

In aid of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, the Gala Cinema Night will include a screening of the movie Sunshine on Leith, followed by a Q&A between sharp-suited expert Kermode and Stephen Greenhorn, screenwriter of the hit film.

Skiffle-loving broadcaster Kermode is probably the most recognisable and trusted film critic in the country, reviewing films for The Observer, BBC News 24 and with a regular film programme on Radio 5 Live alongside Simon Mayo.

His forthright opinions and witty commentary have gained him a legion of fans and, together with Mayo, he created the Wittertainment Code Of Conduct for film audiences – a copy of which has been proudly displayed at the Garden City Cinema since its inception.

Starring Jane Horrocks and Peter Mullan, director Dexter Fletcher’s Sunshine on Leith spins a Mamma Mia!-style story around the songs of Scottish twins The Proclaimers.

Kermode described it on release as having “real down-to-earth charm”.

He went on to say, “I shed a tear within the first 10 minutes, and spent the rest of the movie beaming like a gibbering, love-struck fool”.

All proceeds from the evening will go towards the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and each ticket holder will also receive a very special goody bag worth £95, courtesy of Jo Malone.
